New Canvas on a Wooden Canoe
This canoe had rot because it had been laying in the mud on one side for a long time. It needed new planks, part of the ribs and gunwhales had been rotted out, and the overall condition was deteriorating rapidly, all visible in the top photographs. New rib segments were scarfed in, the planks were replaced and the gunwhales were spliced in above the new planks. The interior wood was thoroughly sanded and all rot was removed. Before canvassing, the cotton duck was stretched between two trees, then the boat was cradled inside the canvas, and stapled on. The outwhales were then attached, the inside of the canoe was varnished, and the outside was painted. The resulting canoe looks almost new.
